Seven factors separate a power station you’ll love from one you’ll resell. Here’s how we weigh each.
Capacity (Wh)
Watt-hours tell you how much energy is stored. The math is simple: a device’s watts × hours of use = watt-hours needed. A 60W fridge running 10 hours needs ~600Wh, so a 1,000Wh unit covers it with margin. Always buy 20–30% more than your calculation to account for inverter losses and cold-weather drop-off.
Output Power (W)
Capacity is the tank; output is the engine. A unit must deliver enough continuous watts to run your highest-draw device — a microwave can spike past 1,200W. Insist on a pure sine wave inverter; modified sine wave is cheaper but can damage sensitive electronics and make motors run hot.
Charging Speed
Three inputs matter: AC wall, solar, and car. Look for a strong MPPT solar controller and a high solar input ceiling (200W+) so panels actually keep up. The best units recharge from the wall in roughly an hour; budget models can take 6–8, which matters when a storm is rolling in.
Portability
