Buying Guide: Camping Power Fundamentals
Five fundamentals separate a camping power system that works from one that leaves you in the dark.
Calculate Your Daily Power Needs
Everything starts in watt-hours per day: the watts a device draws multiplied by the hours you run it. Add up every load and you know how big a battery and how much solar you really need. Don’t estimate from memory — small loads add up fast. A phone at ~10Wh, a 12V fridge at ~400Wh/day, and LED lights at ~20Wh/day lands near ~430Wh/day, which a 500Wh station barely covers for one day.
Solar Panel Types
Portable folding panels are the right call when you park in shade and chase sun, or when you want gear that stows between trips — you angle them for peak output and pack them away. Rigid roof-mount panels make sense once you’re full-time: they charge hands-free all day, but you’re committed to wherever the roof points. Many serious builds run both.
Battery Chemistry
For van life and overlanding, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is the standard for good reason. It delivers 3,000–5,000+ cycles versus a few hundred for lead-acid, and you can safely use roughly 80–100% of its rated capacity instead of half. That means a 100Ah LFP battery gives you the usable power a 200Ah lead-acid bank would, at a fraction of the weight.
Inverter Sizing
Your inverter’s continuous watt rating must clear the combined draw of everything you’ll run on AC at once, with headroom for startup surges from motors and compressors. Just as important: choose a pure sine wave inverter. Cheap modified sine wave units can buzz, run hot, or damage sensitive electronics like CPAP machines, laptops, and camera chargers.
12V vs 120V
Run as much as you can natively at 12V — fridges, lights, fans, USB charging — because every conversion to 120V through an inverter wastes energy. Reserve the inverter for the handful of true AC appliances that have no 12V equivalent, like an induction cooktop or a power tool charger. Prioritizing 12V loads is the single biggest efficiency win in any camping power build.

Camping Power FAQs
How much power do I need for camping?
Add up the watt-hours every device uses per day. A typical weekend camper running a 12V fridge, phone charging, and LED lights needs roughly 400–500Wh per day, so a 1,000Wh power station gives comfortable margin. Heavy users with cooking appliances and laptops can climb past 1,500Wh daily and should pair a larger battery with solar.
Can I run a 12V fridge on a portable power station while camping?
Yes — it’s one of the most common uses. Run the fridge from the power station’s 12V output (the most efficient route) or its AC outlet if needed. A quality compressor fridge averages well under 1A, so a 1,000Wh station can run one for two to three days on a single charge, and indefinitely with a solar panel topping it off. How many solar panels do I need for camping?
It depends on your daily watt-hours and local sun hours. As a rough rule, a single 100W panel returns about 300–500Wh on a good day, enough to offset a fridge-and-devices load. What’s the difference between a portable power station and a solar generator?
Practically nothing — “solar generator” is a marketing term for a portable power station bundled with, or sold ready for, a solar panel. Both are battery boxes with built-in inverters and charge controllers. If a product is called a solar generator, it simply means it ships with or is designed to recharge from solar.
Can I charge a power station while driving?
Yes. Most power stations include a 12V car-socket charging cable, though that socket is slow — often 8–10 hours for a full charge. A faster option is a dedicated DC-DC charger wired to your alternator, which is the standard approach in van and overlanding builds and charges far more quickly while you drive.
