What I Look For in Every Product I Test
After ~70 units on the bench, these are the things I refuse to take a brand’s word on.
With power stations, the number on the box is rarely the number you get. I measure usable watt-hours against the rated capacity, time the recharge from both AC and real solar, and push the inverter with real appliance loads to see how it handles surges. A 1,000Wh unit that only delivers 800Wh of usable power — or stumbles when a fridge compressor kicks in — gets marked down, no matter how good the marketing is.
With 12V fridges and coolers, I track amp draw and pull-down time in real heat, then calculate how long each one will actually run off a given battery. I also weigh build quality and noise, because a fridge you live next to on a quiet campsite needs to earn its place. Whatever the category, my rule is simple: if I wouldn’t put it in my own rig, it doesn’t get my recommendation.
